November 2022: “I Found My Family.”

Dear <<First Name>>,

Twice a year, we host advocate forums inviting advocates to come together to explore the questions, “What do I have to learn?" And "What do I have to give?” in my relationship with my Partner.

Two themes at our fall advocate forum were hospitality and building supportive networks.

See below for an intimate glimpse into Inbar and Leda’s friendship, which offers an example of how these two themes play out in a real Do For One relationship.

Sincerely,
Jane

P.S. Do you ever struggle to explain the beauty and importance of Do For One to others? Then, share our podcast with your friends!

Hospitality

In a city like New York, where most are short on square footage, it is a rare gift to be invited into someone’s home.

Against all odds, Advocates and Partners are opening their homes to one another.

Dinner parties, movie nights, and Friendsgivings are occurring in living rooms across the city. Some Partners who live in group homes or facilities are being invited into regular apartments for the first time in years.

Leda says,

“This Saturday I’m going over to Inbar’s house to bake. It’s a really nice place, we’ve had movie nights there. I could have gone to a special needs social group this Saturday. But I chose not to go! I chose to go to Inbar’s house instead."

"I chose it!"

"I can’t believe this really happened, you know?"

"I can’t believe I have two sisters now.”

Building Supportive Networks

Inviting one more person into a Partners’ life can deeply enrich a relationship. When Inbar and Leda get together, Alma often joins them!

Inbar says,

“My family is all in Israel, so becoming friends with Leda and her mom, Sami has been amazing. They are Jewish, like me, so it really feels like I found my family in New York City."

"We celebrate holidays together."

"I helped them organize their art studio."

"They just let me into their home. I don’t know what I would do without them.”
