November 2025: we are FOR HOPE
Today we’re launching our For Hope Campaign, and we’d love your help reaching our $75,000 end-of-year goal.
Your generosity makes friendships like Jay and Jerry’s possible. See below.
With heartfelt gratitude,
Andrew and the DFO staff and leadership
In times of scarcity and uncertainty, we choose to be for hope—promoting human flourishing by drawing on the abundance within our relationships and community.
Jay & Jerry
When Jay (Advocate) first met Jerry (Partner) nearly three years ago, Jerry was living in a group home. The two connected over blackjack, music, sports, and local food.
Then, due to several unexpected circumstances, Jerry went through multiple housing transitions and had to endure a prolonged period of living in a nursing home.
Amid these challenges, Jay and Jerry grew closer. Jerry shared, “We go to various places, like the ball game. We had a hot dog, french fries, ice cream, and soda. Unfortunately, they lost, but it was nice for me.”
Jerry continued, “I can't get out of the center. The only thing I do is sit on the patio… Jay is a good friend of mine. Anything I need, he brings it for me.”
Jay says, “He lives his life with kindness, humor, decency, and respect for everyone he meets. If we’re getting coffee, walking around Morningside Park, or running errands, there’s always someone who remembers Jerry."

“‘Hi, Mr. Jerry,’ they’ll say. He truly brings out the best in people.”
Now, as Jerry prepares to move to a more accessible residence, Jay has become one of his strongest advocates.
Jerry says, “Thank God I’ll be moving out… I want to get out of here as soon as possible.”
(Update: Since Jerry's interview, we’ve heard from Jerry’s former nursing home roommate that Jerry is indeed “out of there” and very happy at his new place.)
