August 2022: I’m who God says I am

Last weekend, a group of us gathered on Roosevelt Island to pray over the needs of the Do For One community.

One of the many highlights of our time together was when Matthew shared his story with us.

Our friend Silvia, an advocate already involved at Do For One, reached out to us late last year about Matthew, a man with disabilities at her church who has faced many challenges with social isolation and building meaningful relationships.

On May 19th, we introduced Matthew to Phillipp.

Read their story below.

With gratitude,
Andrew

Phillipp & Matthew

When we learned that Matthew loves to sing and aspires to lead worship in a church setting one day, our search for an Advocate started at the church that Matthew was already attending.

That's where we connected with Phillipp.

Phillipp is a leader at their church, a family man who loves to mentor others, and he’s the drummer on the church’s worship team.

A wonderful fit for Matthew!

Matthew says,

“A meaningful memory would be going out and having lunch, and talking about sports, our favorite TV shows, Phillipp telling me about his family, his wife and his son. He always tells me never give up on something that I really wanna do. Even if people see me one way, that’s not who I am. I’m who God says I am.”

When Matthew and Phillip get together they talk about confidence and how to handle rejection.

Phillipp tells Matthew, “What I don’t want you to do is be isolated. God created us for fellowship.”
